Never ready to say goodbye

A charming country church, gorgeous stained glass windows and divine music; it was a beautiful celebration of life.

Funerals are one of the most difficult parts of life, your heart breaks for those grieving the lose of their loved one. In this case a grandmother had to say goodbye to her long time spouse, a family was saying goodbye to their father and grandfather. As a widow, I understand their pain.... he was a fine man of faith. He passed too soon.

As Christians, our faith reassures us our loved one is in heaven but there is such sadness in parting.

During the funeral it gave me peace to be in sanctuary, viewing the images on the windows of Jesus and Mary, as well as being surrounded by loving family and friends.

As the funeral closed the choir sang a lovely and moving song that I was unfamiliar with called Song of Farewell by Ernest Sands:

"May the choirs of angels come to greet you
May they speed you to paradise
May the Lord enfold you in his mercy
May you find Eternal life"

I loved that song, it was so apropos.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now....

Victorian Era Black Enameled Seed Pearl Mourning Locket

Once upon a time so the story begins....

It was a locket unlike anything I have ever seen the likes of, nor shall again. During the early days as a novice collector I obtained a beautiful antique locket and fancied it up with a new chain. My friend purchased it.

It was the be-all and end-all locket.

Rather generous in shape, the material appeared the color of hematite, it had a most interesting raised silver floral design with pearls and a back door glass compartment...the locket was exquisite!

Years later after obtaining and offering hundreds of lockets, that early locket lingered in my mind. Especially after my husband passed away because I am sure it was a mourning locket, the dark color, the pearls representative of tears. I felt a kinship with that locket.

Since I never saw my friend wear it, I queried upon it's whereabouts... turns out she gifted it to her sister-in-law. What hope I had was quickly dashed because it turns out the locket had been absconded in a burglary.

Hindsight is 20/20 ... yep it is.

Color me Happy!

Enameled Snap Link Cufflinks
My favorite kind of weekend... treasure hunting galore!  Ohhhh yea!

Day 1) began with my kind of estate sale ... jam packed with fantastically lovely goodies!
Sliding St Anne Reliquary

Found:  an awesome cache of religious medals, beautiful rosaries, handsome cufflinks, great vintage velvet ribbon, wedding cake toppers, lovely lace, and wonderful old earrings to repurpose.  LOVE!

Repurposed Celluloid Floral Earrings

Day 2) attended with my bestest gal pal, a fabulous antique show! I adore looking at interesting artifacts of the past and this sale was filled with amazing eye candy!

Found:  the coolest Fab Four collectible bracelet, perfume bottle, European charm bracelet, stunning enameled locket.
Beatles Love
I certainly had to restrain myself for there were so many delightful temptations...  left behind a set of rose floral dishes. Did I need them, no, did I want them, ohhhh yes.  I behaved....

On my travels back home a quaint boutique called The Blue Lady beckoned. Turns out, the shop owner Kristen could use earrings in the store.  So glad I stopped and excited for a new venture. It has been a while since I found the right fit for my vintage jewels.  Hooray!

I'm going to be busy listing and repurposing... wish me luck! xoxo

Supertitious... or Not?

Sterling Enameled Four Leaf Clover Charm
It is Friday the 13th... does that make you feel superstitious? Not me! But the day brings to mind the different talismans for luck, superstition and warding off evil some dating to ancient times.

According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover in the garden of Eden. In addition, each of the four leaves on a clover have a different meaning: One is FAITH... The Second HOPE...The Third LOVE... And the Fourth LUCK! In the Irish tradition the shamrock or 3-leaf clover represents the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. However, when a shamrock is discovered With a fourth Leaf, it symbolizes God's Grace. I love that!!

Real Preserved Clover in Locket
When my daughter and now son-in-law were planning their wedding, I voiced an opinion that ruffled some feathers. Feeling badly, I sent an apology note and my son-in-law reciprocated. In the card he gifted me a four leaf clover that he had saved, both gestures were very touching. Sniffle...
Lucky in Love Charm

His action goes with the belief that if you pass along your four leaf clover your luck will double. It sure did... because he not only got my precious daughter, but gained a great family as well!

Lucite Encased Four Leaf Clover Charm
A good luck charm is defined as,

An object, which upon possession delivers a positive influence to the fortunes of a person. The object could be a lucky shirt, hat, charm, rabbits foot and so on. How about when you make wish on a wishbone?  Charming legends and folklore surround being lucky.

Victorian Good Luck Token Stick Pin

The Victorians loved nature and whimsy, their good luck tokens were from Mother Nature such as acorns, flora and fauna as well as bugs like butterflies and dragonflies. How charming is that!

Victorian Butterfly Locket Pendant

Cures for Cabin Fever

What a long cold and snowy winter this has been! Here in Buffalo we broke a record for the coldest February ever. Woweee! Winter weather definitely can take a toll on your spirit. But hey, we survived and now have a story to tell. remember that February when it was darn cold... maybe we should just forget it and move on.. after all it's almost mid-March and SPRING!

While staying warm inside under mounds of blankets, I compiled a list of cabin fever solutions to help beat winter doldrums....
  • Cook and bake! No better way to warm the soul, your home and the hearts of your family than with comfort foods; a hearty soup, stew or chicken pot pie... yum! Plenty of new recipes to discover and test on Pinterest! Who knows, you might just find a new family favorite! How about some delish cookies for dessert, who can resist home baked treats?
  • Embrace winter, go sledding, skiing or ice-skating. Even a brisk walk in the chilly air can be stimulating!
    That's me... embracing winter!
  • Plan a summertime get-a-way, just thinking of warmth and sunshine is uplifting and gives you something to look forward to.
  • If you can swing it.. take a winter vacation and head south to Florida or a tropical location... ahhhh... warmth and sunshine!
  • Arrange a luncheon at home with your girlfriends. Some good old girl talk will bolster your frame of mind for sure! Setting a pretty table adds to the fun!
Vintage china love!
  • Who doesn't love clothes? Head to the mall to browse the bright spring colors already out in full force! A hot color will stimulate your mood! Even though it may be chilly, layer that new shirt under a cardigan.
  • Explore a museum, art gallery or local place you've been meaning to check out.
  • Start a scrapbook or order an online photo-book. Now is a fine time to organize family photos into an album and create everlasting memories
  •  Plan a game night...add friends or family, some snacks (Pinterest of course) and let the competition begin!
  • How about a movie night? Break out the popcorn, pillows, blankets and snuggle up for a cozy evening! Or watch old family videos, reminiscing and laughing at the memories!
  • Have an indoor picnic! If you have a fireplace, you can spread a blanket and let your imagination take flight! If not, light some candles and enjoy picnic fare.
  • Pamper yourself with a spa day. The special attention will make you feel like a million!
  •  Plan your summer garden. Again, Pinterest has a plethora of ideas and the thought of lovely flowers will make you feel perky!
Sterling Flower Charm
  • Lastly and my personal favorite is shopping online….. the perfect place to browse is Etsy, of course! Perhaps you might think ahead and find a birthday gift, mother’s or father’s day gift now while you are stuck inside! And while you are perusing treat yourself to a special treasure!
Spring is on the horizon and this year we need it B-A-D!
