If I Didn't Laugh... I Would be Crying

Have a little Faith ... it will work out just fine
Right now I could cry.. because I just discovered that I've made a huge blunder in my Etsy shop. Really, though I'm laughing at myself because it was quite dumb of me! The error being, I didn't add tags to my listings... oh, I typed them out in the little box provided just fine, but never hit the add button at the end. This big faux pas is going to take hours to correct.

The saying comes to mind you cannot teach an old dog new tricks! There definitely is a learning curve with anything new and I've been trying very hard to gain insight. The tips provided by Etsy implicitly stress using all 13 tags to describe an item. Makes perfect sense to be found in searches and I did just that. However, I simply did not notice the "ADD" button at the end of tagging. I get it now, boy do I get it!

Experience is a good teacher and you definitely learn and grow from mistakes. In the end, I must have faith it's all going to work out .... in the meantime, my work is cut out for me editing my listings!   Sigh....

To view my (un)tagged listings head on over to my Etsy Shop:   https://www.etsy.com/shop/MiladyLinden

Happy Birthday Dear Mom!

They say home is where the heart is and the heart of the home is definitely Mom!

Today I am blessed to celebrate a milestone birthday with my dear Mother, 85 years and going strong.  A few months ago, we went through a scare; there was a negative finding which led to a plethora of tests. Thankfully the end result were cysts. God is good! The thought of my sweet mom being ill devastated me and I know it is inevitably going to come ...  each day is a gift.

Mom taught me countless lessons during my upbringing and to this day, I learn from her. Above all she showed me how to love by example. Her devotion to family and taking care of us all. She taught me faith, the satisfaction of a job well done and about working hard. Mom loves to bake, her apple pie is the best... and her comfort foods; pigs in the blanket, chicken noodle soup with homemade noodles, and try as I may cannot duplicate her pork roast. Her home is spotless and decorated beautifully.

Mom always understood the cozy side of life…her love of sewing produced gorgeous quilts to snuggle up with and adorn our beds as well. There were soft pajamas for a night of pleasant dreams. Not to mention the charming outfits she made my daughter during her childhood!

Mom is feisty, strong, and sharp as a tack. She is up on the current trends and does crossword puzzles all the time to keep her mind keen.

As a grandmother, I witnessed her loving care through fresh eyes dedicated to my daughter and son from the moment they were born to this day.

There are not words to describe my gratitude for my Mom's affection...  she is a blessing and my role model.

Happy Birthday Mom! xo

The Vintage table ... mismatched china

Long before mismatched china became trendy and we could find wonderful ideas on Pinterest... I discovered mix and match vintage china.  There was a picture of a mismatched place setting in a magazine and I became SMITTEN!

Not being one for fine china in perfectly matched style, my preference leaned to the eclectic flair of vintage china... florals in soft pastels and pink roses.  Havilland ...  Nippon ... Chintz ... English Bone and the like! So fun to collect and even lovelier to use!

Aren't these simply gorgeous?  Over the years I assembled a wonderful collection. The pinnacle was a vintage tea party bridal shower .. and that is a story for another day!  ♥

Mismatched china .... what an amazing look for a shower or wedding!
Love, love, love it! ♥ xo

Antique Printer's Tray

I walked passed, once, twice, pondered and deliberated .... and in the end I bought it!

The "it" being a Hamilton antique printer's tray! And it was full of super cool rustic letters, numbers and symbols.  I'm loving spelling out special words and dates. So glad I found it!

Oh Joy!

Valentine's Day... My Favorite Day!

Perfect for rustic wedding decor... I do .... do ....

Congrats to the new Mr. and Mrs.

Cashing in!

Not only are the letters, numbers and symbols great, but wooden case is wonderful. There are great ideas to repurpose the tray on Pinterest.. a wall shelf, a tray, a display case for vintage collectibles.

The Art of Mosaics

Vintage Repurposed Mosaic Necklace with Cross

I am enamored with vintage mosaics ... take a look and you will concur, they are amazing!
Mosaic artistry is a wonderful medium in which images are expertly created with teensy pieces of colored glass to form a pattern or picture.
Much of the vintage mosaic jewelry I have discovered hails from Italy, lovely souvenir treasures of travel.  However, the history of mosaics dates back to ancient times.

In repurposing vintage jewelry, I love utilizing the multi-colored mosaic treasures. For example, I remove the backs of clip-on earrings or pin backs of brooches to transform into wearable pieces such as those depicted in the photos ....

Vintage mosaic earrings simply beautiful with the clip-backs intact ... for those with non-pierced ears!

Have you met Victoriana?

Victorian Heart Locket with Brilliants
Lockets are the ultimate gift of love, adoration and romance, in my opinion!

Lockets have been around for centuries, a vessel to hold a precious keepsake or memento. The Victorian Era, however, more than any period, brought lockets into vogue and the lockets from the Victorian period are some of my most beloved.

My fascination for the Victorian Era commenced with my first prized locket of that epoch. So I did a little sleuthing on the era ... turns out Prince Albert and Queen Victoria shared an ardent love for one another. They had nine children in their 21 years of marriage (wow and wow on both counts)  and with each birth, Victoria was presented with a tiny locket filled with a snippet of the infant’s hair and inscribed with the birthdate. I love this idea, don't you? This thoughtful and lovely tradition would be a beautiful way to celebrate the birth of a baby today.
Aesthetic Design Locket
Some of the most ornate and fabulous lockets span throughout Victorian times. In a variety of shapes, there are oval puffy lockets that contain glass inserts holding delightful antique photographs. There is also the secret compartment locket that held a photograph or token sequestered within a hidden door in the back. Mourning lockets, also known as funeral lockets became prevalent especially after the Prince passed away because the Queen went into an extensive period of mourning. The lockets were given when a loved one passed away as a token of remembrance. Some lockets contain braided hair, which was a Victoriana art form.

Since the Victorian Era spanned so many decades the designs were varied. Popular were lockets decorated in Etruscan revival style, taille d’epargne enameling, those set with agates, adorned with attractive monogramming, or buckle motif, set with pearls, turquoise, diamonds or paste. In addition, the appealing aesthetic movement was a popular theme with delightful Japanese nature motifs and birds; many were in sterling silver.
Taille d'Epargne Enameled Locket
There was much symbolism contained as well. For example pearls were symbolic of tears; the buckle for strength and protection; the garter symbol which exhibited loyalty and brotherhood; the fleur-de-lis, a stylized flower, is the symbol of light and hope, also meaning trinity; ivy for everlasting life; the wreath a symbol of victory.
Fleur de Lys Locket
I have been blessed to have a diverse selection of Victorian lockets over the years. Always a thrill to discover, each locket is unique and special. A perfect gift for a loved one, lockets are evermore timeless treasures. How can you resist any one of these beauties?  xo

Forty days...

Ash Wednesday, the commencement of Lent and a time when Christians strive to be more prayerful and reflect on Jesus' sacrifice with abstention.  It is forty days before Easter excluding Sundays and concluding on Holy Thursday.
Some Christians celebrate Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday in anticipation of forfeiting something during Lent, like alcohol or sweets.
Another way is to consider if you have any habits that make you difficult to live with. Maybe you've you hurt someone close to you with an action? I know I have. Perhaps we nag, complain, or have other negative behavior that could be obliterated. Lent is a time to open our hearts to possibilities for self improvement.

Psalm 91:2
I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."
Blessings xo

When One Door Closes...

A sunny yellow door sits in my garden, it adds a touch of whimsy, don't you think?

When you think about it, doors represent an opportunity. Each day when you enter a door it's a chance to do your best; at a job, in your relationships, social events, church, where-ever you are...

There is a quote by Alexander Graham Bell "When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us".

In life, it's a fact, doors close... and it can be darn painful. When a new door opens, however, hopefully it presents a more favorable situation.

In the past six months, I experienced two altering incidents. The first was the decision to close my shop on Ruby Lane, which my late hubby helped me open 9 years ago. 2013 was my most successful year, however, the site implemented changes that did not seem conducive to continued growth.  I was shelling out a fee for marketing but everyone I queried had never heard of the site. Pretty much everyone knows about ETSY! Even though I am starting from square one, I'm praying for a favorable outcome selling on ETSY!

The second occurrence was the door that slammed in my face when my position at work was terminated. It had to happen because it was an unsavory atmosphere, yet still after four years of employment, it was took some adjusting on my part.

I have enjoyed the time off ... partook in much needed classes in Excel and PowerPoint wooohoo! Spent quality time with family. Tried to increase my knowledge about marketing on ETSY, started this blog and was able to be creative repurposing jewels again... hooray! And the best part, I was able to hibernate in this very chilly and quite snowy winter... brrr! My goal of getting stuff organized ... is best described as procrastination!

And so I ponder when new doors open... what will be inside?

Mother of Pearl in Antique Cufflinks

Double Button Mother of Pearl Art Deco Cufflinks
Perhaps it is due to my starry-eyed nature that I find antique cufflinks so elegant and sentimental! Imagining a well-dressed gentleman with French cuffs embellished with handsome cufflinks conjures up a romantic evening sipping champagne and floating across the dance floor! (I think that only happens in the movies, right?) Additionally, a beautiful and feminine blouse adorned with pretty cufflinks summons images of charming clothing of bygone eras.
Mother of Pearl Button Cufflinks
Two of my best-loved eras to discover and collect are the Victorian through the Art Deco Period.  The Victorian Era used a button style with tab closure, the Deco Era brought a snapping link style cufflink which was highly popular in the Roaring '20's!  In my opinion these antique beauties remain just as stylish and vogue today.
Victorian Mother of Pearl with Moss Agate Cufflinks
My favorite cufflink material from the Victorian to the Deco Era include fascinating celluloid and lustrous mother of pearl, especially in the Deco era the two were combined to create a stunning cufflink. Additionally, the Mother of Pearl was carved and inlaid with decorative metal settings or gemstones.
Carved Mother of Pearl Button Cufflinks
One of my daughter's childhood friends planned a vintage wedding.  The groomsmen'a gifts chosen by the bride and her fiancé were a selection of Deco cufflinks with a green celluloid to match their college colors. It was a rewarding experience to provide the cufflinks for their special day!

Treasured keepsakes... a connection to the past

Home Sweet Home Vintage Celluloid Brooch
Nostalgia is defined as “a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one’s life, to one’s home or homeland, or to one’s family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time”.
There can be comfort in the past… an collectible or even a scent can elicit a special memory The smell of a freshly baked apple pie , for example, can transport you back to your Grandma’s kitchen!
Over the years of selling online, many customers have informed me they purchased an item because of its connection with the past. The collectible, a reminder of a place, time or person, a tie binding their heartstrings.
Charms that spell LOVE!
So often a customer relays the message “Oh, this brooch reminds me of my grandmother” or “My mother had a charm just like this when I was growing up”.  Or sadly they owned a piece and it was lost, they are so grateful to find it once again. Collectibles are so nostalgic! Treasured keepsakes.
During my childhood, our family spent summer weekends at a relative’s home. Recently, I drove through the area and a nearby factory emitted an odor that took me back in time. I found myself driving down the street just to look at the house where we had formed such happy memories, my relatives, however, long gone from the home.
My grandmother was not really a saver; my mother relates how she threw everything away because she did not want any clutter, oh Grammy I am not like you! Still, I am lucky to have a few of her treasures: her silverware, the monogrammed initial “S” mirroring my own married surname. As she aged, she instructed me to pick out something special for myself so she could witness my enjoyment! I choose a Hummel, and that figurine evokes remembrance of my sweet and loving grandmother.
Sometimes a certain collectible embodies a loved one. A customer who grew up in the United States but now resided in France purchased an antique compact as an affectionate memento her of her beloved mother and a military item that represented her father. Both her parents had passed and I was glad to provide the tokens of sentimentality and interested to hear her stories that connected with her past.

Nostalgic tokens can preserve a cherished memory. What memento do you possess that provides reminiscence?

Being Pushed Aside

Art Deco Sterling Blessed Virgin Mary Medal
Estate sales can be great fun especially when you find a house jam packed with a variety of vintage treasures!

It was just that kind of sale several years ago when something interesting transpired. Did you ever go to an event when you were shoved? People do those types of things at estate sales ... imagine that!

But on that random Friday, me strategically positioned at a table perusing the collectibles, when lo and behold I was pushed until eventually at the end of the table!  Geez!

That was one of the best things that could have happened, however, because right under my nose was a box of religious medals. Hmmm... hey self, I thought, as I poked in the box, these are pretty awesome! At 3/$1 they were a bargain ... After doing some quick research at home, I returned to buy the rest which were reduced to 4/$1.

Over the years, it has been inspirational to gain knowledge on the diverse medals and their significance. The wonderful names for the Blessed Virgin Mary; and the variety of spiritual Saints struck into medals.

Especially meaningful has been the stories of customers and what the devotionals have meant to them.

Since that day, I have discovered hundreds of faith treasures, none ever at that bargain price though! It brings deep joy to offer these collectibles as well as create jewelry in my Faith series with found religious trinkets.

That day turned out to be a blessing in more ways than one. Patience is a definitely a virtue! And the best news is that most of the time these items are overlooked at estate sales, but I know they will be just perfect for someone.

In faith and blessings. xoxo

Retail Therapy Anyone?

Most of us love "stuff" ... and many women enjoy shopping. There are a plethora of clever quotes about retail therapy. For instance "Keep calm and go shopping" or "Shopping costs the same as therapy but I get a new dress".

Admittedly, I enjoy the thrill of the hunt, not only for vintage treasures but for the perfect outfit and accessories. We girls love to adorn ourselves and our homes ... it makes us feel good. After all you are special why not treat yourself!

Nine years ago, my husband became ill and suddenly passed away. My heart was broken and although I was surrounded by loving friends and family, there was the void. When my head hit the pillow at night my thoughts were that I survived another day being alone; a widow a single parent, no longer a wife. Eventually I built a new and different life for myself.  It is filled with joy and new adventures, my friends call me brave. I made a choice to move forward.

So, what does this have to do with shopping you ask? My confession is that I needed a distraction from loss and grief, and therefore, shopped. Is my house filled with too many possessions? Umm, yep, but in the end, I have learned about vintage collectibles and it has fueled my passion for creating and enjoyment of online selling. And I have an outlet in my ETSY shop for purging the belongings whenever I am ready! xoxo

My World of Quirkiness

Vintage figurines on Victorian corner shelf
Because I am fascinated with a variety of collectibles my home can best be described as eclectic to say to the least!

and.. the range of my vintage treasures can be defined as eccentric and quirky with a touch of sweetness.

I am head over heels for Victorian shelves such as the one pictured, my kids poke fun at me ... Hey Mom you've got an empty wall, how about another shelf?!  At last count, I have 11! Is that too many?

The umbrella shelf is definitely different ... I love the ladies holding their parasols, it makes me smile. Adorning the shelf is a pair of German composition half dolls with wigs, porcelain lady figurines, a lady box and a celluloid lady comb, frivolities I enjoy!

So what kind of collectibles make your heart go pitter patter?

Off the Cuff...

As with most of my collecting passions discovering antique cufflinks was pleasant happenstance. I just love them!  Hopelessly romantic, cufflinks bring visions of dapperly dressed gents and wedding accoutrements.
Awesome Mother of Pearl Art Deco Snap Link Cufflinks

Centuries ago shirt sleeves were tied with ribbons until the invention of the early cufflink, a practical necessity which eventually became a fashionable accessory.
Art Deco Snap Link Cufflinks
The pinnacle of cufflinks was in the Art Deco era, particularly the Roaring '20's, when this "snap link" style was all the rage. This  type of cufflink remains vogue and fashionable today. The most coveted are by the Baer & Wilde Company. They are quite handsome don't you think?

Once I had a bride and groom purchase green with mother of pearl cufflinks for their groomsmen gifts, made for a great vintage wedding look!
Repurposed Victorian Cufflink Bracelet
Generally during my vintage forays, orphaned cufflinks turn up. Call me happy because I snatch them up to create repurposed cufflink bracelets like this Victorian beauty! So fun to put together, making them tickles my creative spirit!

The Inspiration of Mary Englebreit

One of my Collection of Home Companion Magazines from 2004!

Mary Englebreit is an inspiration, I've always loved her cheerful and happy artwork, her clever Maryism's as well as the way she decorated her home. When it was published, I enjoyed her Home Companion magazine and as you can see I have held on (yea, not in a hoarding kind of way... hahaha) to those magazines. Still like to peruse them from time to time and continue to love the home decor ideas held within.  I can totally blame some of my vintage collections on the influence of ME!
Definitely ME style houses and flowers!

When I spotted this vintage Valentine greeting card it reminded me of the style of ME with the charming and cozy houses and flowers. It is enchanting!
Art Deco Enameled Brooch, Happy Flowers! LOVE it!
This fun and whimsical brooch also makes me think of ME, the cheerful flowers and use of black and white.

The Art Deco era is definitely one of my favorites with a unique style of it's own! And Mary Englebreit is also a fav of mine as well as countless others. In addition I've always been enchanted by flower baskets such as on the brooch and this compact below!

In the words of the Queen of Everything: "I have found that if you love life, it will love you right back"  Thanks ME for your artistic inspiration!

Ways to Say I Love You ... the Victorian Love Token

Engraved and Enameled Initial-F on Victorian Love Token
Ornately Engraved Calligraphic Monogram on Victorian Love Token

She he captured his heart and the love token would express his ardor, Flora would be pleased at receiving the gift and his proposal of marriage. It would be a offering she would cherish always.

A charming memento of Victoriana, is the love token. Love tokens were designed on a coin such as the seated liberty dime. The coin was worked smooth with an ornate decoration carved on one or both sides of the coin. Sometimes, the coin would be inscribed with a loving phrase, or a flower, a bird or other lovely imagery as well as intricately intersecting calligraphic monogramming or a fancy single initial. These coins are nostalgic and romantic vestiges of a lost art. Some of the carvings on love tokens are rudimentary while others are amazing with the implication of love palpable.

The love token was popular in the latter part of the 1800's into the early 1900's when fashions changed and they were no longer stylish.  Every changing trends... Love tokens are precious antique mementos of a bygone era.  I was blessed to find a coin with my own initials of KS, a treasure indeed! Someday I will find one engraved Mother, I'd love that! xo
